The 1865 Customs of Service for Officers of the Army-Review

The 1865 Customs of Service for Officers in the Army. This Handbook goes over everything from how you treat your fellow officers, to the rations you enjoy. This is now a History Book. And it is worth a Read! (Guess what?! It ain’t a Fiction book!! Shocking, Ain’t it?)

Please note that everything you read below is just my personal opinion. I do not know everything. Nor would I want to. I will not respond to negative comments.

Title/Author:

The 1865 Customs of Service for Officers of the Army. August Kautz. *Due to that fact that this book isn’t readily available, I have included the link for the E-Book version. I have a hardcover edition, but I got it from Ft. Laramie, Wyoming for 25$. There is one being sold on Amazon for 850$. Just get the E-Book. Much as I hate ’em.

Times Read:

-.5.  Yes, I’ve only read Half of this. But it really interesting. It goes over everything from, “What are my rations today?” to “How should I conduct R&R?” to “I’m a Lt. Gen. now, how am I supposed to treat my Subordinates?”. It is really worth a read. And I definitely Recommend it!

Genre:

-Non-Fiction.  There really isn’t another other Genre for this. Unless you consider Military to be one.

Rating:

-9/10

Age Range:

-Author(s) Suggest: He did not suggest an Age. And I have seen no reviews for this book. The author Probably intended this for those enlisting in the army. So those who are 15+, back in the 1800’s at least.

-My Opinion: Since the Civil war is over, and we are even past the WW’s. I suggest this book for anyone interested in serving in the Army. I bet that a lot has changed since these days (I’m not a Military Man myself.) But you should always know your history first! so 17+.

The reason I chose 17+ is because there are a lot of words that Even I don’t understand. And I’m a second year in College. This has nothing to do with someone being too young for this book. I’m just looking at someone who knows what they want to do, and who understands more than Basic Vocabulary.

Basic Review:

– First off, This book is not about the Vietnam war! I saw that in the description on amazon. Sorry, but this is set in the time of the Civil War. Secondly, this book is NOT a fiction book. That is why I tagged it as Non-Fiction. First time I have done that, So I’m sorry If you are Surprised.

Long Review:

– I have no doubt that you looked at your feed, and wondered what the heck this is. Well, put simply: READ THE TITLE. Yes, this is a book for officers of the US Army. Well, Back in 1865 anyways. Here’s the thing, you can read it now! And you don’t have to be an officer in the US Army. Or in any of the Corps. You can be a normal Civilian like me. If you want to read it that is.

Simply put: “How are we supposed to treat our subordinates? How am I supposed to hold myself? What am I supposed to do during combat? What are the common Rations in my Camp? How do I clean my Knife?” <- All these questions and More are answered!! To a certain extent anyway.

This book is something everyone should read at some point. It goes over R&R (Rest and relaxation/restoration), The draft, Rations, Combat, What your specific Title Entails…

As I stated earlier, I have the Hard Cover version. And it’s not that big. Honestly, You may need reading glasses to read it. It is maybe 6″ Tall, 4.5″ Wide, and 2″ in Depth. Guess that’s why it is called a HandBook. 😛

And, That’s the review!

Would Recommend?

-Yes! And not just for those who wish to enter the Military, or who are in the Military. I recommend it for Everyone!!

Thanks for readin!
